2008!

January 1, 2008

Bonne année et bonne santé to all of you.

This is the first year in the many years I’ve lived in France that we haven’t forced ourselves to eat a big meal on New Year’s Day. The sun is out for a change, we came home late last night, Claire’s working hard on her portfolio, Paul is completely crashed out and Damien’s with his friends in Spain. Yesterday our friend Emmanuelle convinced us to go on a 15-kilometer walk because of her theory that if you’re going to eat a large meal on New Year’s Eve you should deserve it – there was no dancing at her party last night, but the food was well appreciated. But today we just want to relax.

There is someone who misses that big New Year’s Day foodfest, though. Mittens knows that there’s smoked salmon in the fridge and he’s been sitting impatiently by our dining room table, waiting for us to break it out….

And I just feel this amazing feeling of relief that the holiday season is over (it’s over for me). I love January, because the days are already getting longer and I know we’re headed toward Spring.

I’m always full of hope that this year will be better than last year. I will, of course, eat only healthy food, exercise regularly and improve myself in uncountable ways. Yesterday, when I started to think about this post, I was almost afraid to look at last year’s art plan, certain as I was not to have done half of it. Surprise surprise! I wasn’t as ambitious as I usually am, and as I look back, I’ve kept with my goals, and even surpassed them sometimes, despite some notable slumps.

So now it’s time to set some for this year.

1. Sketch a lot.

2. Go on a trip and make a sketchbook about it.

3. Work on a series (this is a holdover from last year – I didn’t do everything I wanted to).

4. Take another class from Kate Johnson.

5. (Maybe) work (tentatively) toward putting together a (sort of) exhibition (somehow)……

6. Keep working towards improving life drawing skills.

7. Here’s the really important one – do a much better job in keeping up with my online friends (some of whom have become real life friends). I think the support and friendship of the wonderful people I’ve met through the Everyday Matters group and blogging in general has been the very best thing about 2007.

So there they are – modest but, I think, do-able (except maybe number 5….)

What about yours?

I love your cat’s expectant look. I know that eager-must-eat-you – are-starving-me look. Reading your post helps me to know you a little bit better. And I’m thankful that in 2007 I discovered your blog and you!
I can’t wait to see your new work and I wonder just what project you are going to select. I’m GOING to get our passports this year and eventually, I’ll make it to the Continent and we can go drawing together.

Happy New Year! I just wanted to say hello and how much I’ve enjoyed looking through your work. The sketchbook you constructed is marvelous – such paitience! I’m going to read through that more carefully later. Cheers and all good things in the new year.

I must agree, this year I’ve made some very wonderful connections with people online. and yes, I want to continue to nurture those friendships as well. Maybe we should add a goal to somehow meet once again this year! Wouldn’t it be great for several of us to all gather and spend time together sketching and sharing! My wish to you my friend is that you reach your goals this year and continue to share the beauty of your art and soul with all of us. Bonne année a vous!

Happy New Year Casey! I love your sketches and your artwork and hope to see more of it in 2008. I’m moving to France in 10 days time so perhaps one day we shall actually meet! Bonne année!

Happy New Year Casey – I posted my overall goals for the year, I hope I can keep them. I also hope to make inroads into the 100 things project.

The cat picture is wonderful, Perhaps someone should start a blog where one artists work is featured each month. A virtual art show? I haven’t really seen anything like that yet, but maybe it’s out there. Perhaps that could be # 97 on the 100 things project.

Excellent post, Casey. Your art goals sound terrific, though I think you already do a really good job of weighing in with your online friends. By the way, I also love the cat sketch here. My list of goals is on my blog site, too, but unsaid on that list is my intention to keep finding new ways to make interesting sketchbook pages. Happy new year!

I always love looking at your blog and your art!! Your goals sound well thought out and I think you should really go for it… ESPECIALLY #5!!!!!! I like # 7 also… I plan to include that one in my goal list…. which I’m still thinking about.
    Happy New Year Casey!

Your new year’s eve and day sounded just perfect! We went to two beautiful, beautiful parties, but a friend of ours and I made a vow we’d be in Paris next new year’s! I love your goals, especially the parts about your (two) trips, one to North Carolina, and the other one… elsewhere ;D. I also love the part about your keeping up with your friends, though I think you do a pretty good job already. But mostly, I love the part about you doing more art.

Casey, I have a question – maybe you’ve written abou this in a previous poast (and feel free to point me there). What pen and ink do you use for your sketches? I have Lamy Safari cartridge pens that I love and use for wwriting and sketching but the ink bleeds which is fine but not so much for using with watercolor. ?

Happy Happy New Year to you!

Excellent, doable goals Casey. And ones which I am confident you will excel in with flying colors. Ahem, why the hesitancy on number 5? You CAN do this!! Our next class with Kate will be starting before we know it! I’m looking forward to it as well as to watching your art grow in ’08!!!

Suzanne, I just use a pilot rollerball 007 most of the time. It isn’t really waterproof, but sometimes I like it when it bleeds a bit. If I don’t want that, I use pencil or eraseable pen first and go back over the lines once the watercolor is dry.

I love the way the sediment in the dark blue paint creates the look of soft fur. Very nice drawing too. Thank you so much for all your wonderful comments on my blog this year. It’s been a pleasure to watch your growth and your unique style develop. I only wish I had the time to visit more regularly.
