Still Life with Fruit

April 19, 2007

This is a response to a challenge set by my friend Ronell <http://rnllvanwyk.blogspot.com/> We decided on Wednesday that we’ve been doing far too many quick sketches as compared to actual paintings. We decided to define a ‘painting’ as bigger than a moleskine page, and to do at least one per week, on a general theme we’d agree upon. This week I got to pick, and it’s a still life with fruit, as the title to this post would suggest. Here, then, is my watercolor with a touch of pastel, and it’s 10″ by 14″. Check out Ronell’s blog, African Tapestry, to see what she comes up with before Monday (our deadline!) It’s the first one in my blogroll.

I forgot to come to this blog, so I left a comment on the other, and it is so long, I’m not going to say everything here again…except…I love this painting, it is really beautiful. the skin on those oranges are really “alive”!I’m thinking this is something we should’ve started long time ago..

This certainly fits the goal you have made for yourselves. It is so lovely and has so much depth and wonderful color. Definitely a framer!

    Good idea. Excellent work

Lovely, Casey! The colors are luscious.

And what a great idea…I’ve noticed that we tend to get hung up in the blogging thing without going on to something larger/more serious. Not sure I’m up to making any commitments right now, though, with the rehab project on my hands!

Beautifully done – luscious colors on the fruit and a very lovely pottery bowl! I’ve been sort of doing a similar self-challenge since the first of the year, my goal is to work on art daily, but not necessarily finish something every day. I don’t post value studies or thumbnails, just the finished product. This goal has worked for me and I bet you and Ronell will reap great artistic rewards as you work on “frameable” art weekly! I look forward to checking in on your blogs!!

Great idea, and this is a lovely painting. Is it the pastel that gives it the texture?

ok, Casey & Ronelle, I’m thinking I might want to join you in on this expeciton into tapping into our potential and pushing ourselves a bit more. Let’s see what I come up with by Monday! This (Still life with fruit) of course is beautiful as always!

This is stunning! I love the colors–so fruity and your composition is wonderful. I envy your artistic partnership. It’s also so fruitful. I too found that a focus on sketching and blogging can take away from creating finished works which is why I cut back on my blogging to every other day in order to have more time for paintings. Very nice work and a real treat to see your finished painting!

    Thank you everybody.
Dave, the paper is rough, and that helps with the orange skin – and dragging the pastel over it adds to the effect.
Anybody who wants to join us, just do it! No sign up, and we’d love suggestions for future themes.

This is wonderful and I just love those colours!

This is great! The colors just glow! I think it is a logical step to move to bigger “corner to corner” pieces rather than always just doing sketches in a sketchbook — so good for you guys for coming up with your own challenge. This is going to be fun to watch — and I may just have to do a bowl of fruit now…

Oh this is so beautiful! I’m stunned.
