Sketching in Maui

February 17, 2010

Last summer, I chanced to meet two wonderful women from Maui, Lisa and Debbie, and their daughters who were vacationing in France. It turns out that they are both painters, and passionate about art. One thing led to another, they invited us to come and visit any time, and, well, we’ve just returned from an amazing two-week stay in Maui.

For part of the time I took part in a plein-air workshop – more about that later – but I did manage to squeeze in a few sketches.  They were done very quickly, as we were often on the move.

We spent most of our time on Maui, with a quick trip to Molokai.

Here are a few impressions. Here’s me sketching La Pérouse Bay, with my friend Debbie holding my sketchbook:

A day of big surf on the North Shore:

and a few more scenes from around the island:

In the next post, I’ll share some that I did on Molokai.

Very nice! I couldn’t sketch to save my life, but if I COULD, Maui would be the perfect place to do it!
