Watercolor Pencil again

March 12, 2008

I had something of a breakthrough this morning when I realized I had to stop drawing with my wc pencils and then adding water.  I couldn’t control it at all.  Here I’ve tried dipping the pencils in water  and working directly in “paint mode” on wet and dry paper, and splattering with my water brush.  I also find that water brushes are easier to control than traditional brushes dipped in water.

So I’m getting there….This is the very first one – that hasn’t gone directly into the bin in over a week.  I hope I’ll make progress more quickly now!

Thanks for all the friendly comments when I was getting desperate – they really helped.

I like the way this turned out. I haven’t done a lot with watercolor pencils. When I have, I’ve drawn with the pencils and then added water. The results are usually unpredictable and never quite the way I want them. i’ll have to try your “paint mode” technique sometime.

Yay for your breakthrough, Casey! I’m glad you persisted because this is just beautiful.

This looks really great Casey…glad you’ve found the way that works for you…it turned out beautifully clear with each colour nicely standing on its own, nice atmosphere…it’s all there. So now we can look forward to more!

This is super! I think you’ve found something that might work for you with the pencils.

I love your DVD still sketches too – what a good idea when it’s too rotten outside to go out.

This is PERFECT! Maybe this technique will work for me; I have them but never use them, I’ll try this.

LOVE the painting and now can’t wait to try your “wet first” technique.

I don’t know what you’re talking about, this drawing looks pretty. Keep at it 🙂

Glad you resolved this – and so beautifully too. That spot of fuschia is terrific, and I love the way you’ve nestled the house among the greens.

I love these Casey – just the other day I was wondering if you might be using them in a way that was not working for you. I use them by dipping them or using a wet brush directly onto the point of the pencil. I guess I never really liked the drawing part of the WC pencils, just that they are convenient ways of carrying water colors.
    Good luck, keep going!

Well there you go, Casey, that’s beautiful. I particularly love the way the marks are more defined at the top of the painting and then drift into that lovely soft pattern of colours at the bottom.

Hey, really nice! I tired the wc pencil last week…didn’t post becuase it was awful! i realized it’s so differenct from the way I approach a watercolor. You are doing great and good to see you taking control of this new medium. This sketch is really lovely with it’s bright color!
