Le Chat Bourgeois

November 30, 2007

There’s a wonderful text by Jacques Sterberg called Les Esclaves (from Les Contes glacés) which posits that God created the cat in his image, but, as the cat was lazy, God had to create man.  Man busied himself creating all sorts of completely useless things, but among the were a few useful inventions such as the radio, canned tuna and the radiator.  And man never even suspected, in all his frenetic activity, that he was put on earth to provide comfort for cats…

This is where Mittens has taken to passing his days since the beginning of the cold weather – stretched across the radiator cover in our bedroom, right on the vent.  There’s a stream of cold air coming in through the window, but that doesn’t seem to bother him.

I love that story and this wonderful picture that absolutely perfectly captures kitty indolence. Thanks for the big grin your post and drawing gave me!

I’m awake so early his morning(only 4:30!) and it’s cold!
Mittens looks as content as he could ever be..mine always enjoy the radiator(very uncomfortable) and I check every so often, because I’m afraid they’ll burn up! Great those two front paws.

This is so lovely! Cats love radiators and sunbeams don’t they?! I’ve never seen one directly on top before though!

You know I’ve always loved your work, but now seeing it, I have the added fun of knowing your subjects—Mittens, that windowsill, your family members, etc—and it is just so great! The only bad thing is, it makes me want to move to Amboise immediately.

Those felines really know how to relax and you’ve captured it perfectly!

although I have a cat phobia….I love seeing your pictures of Mittens. If I liked cats, this is one that I would enjoy knowing. He seems to have such a “the world is about me” attitude….much like me! LOL

And if a dog looks at us and says you’re god, the cat looks at us and says I’m god. And my cats love to lay on the patio on the sun and it’s hot in Florida. All that fur must by decorative. This is an adorable drawing.
