A Bridge in Rome

September 6, 2007

This is the week 2homework for my watercolor class with Kate Johnson. We’re actually on week 4. I’m struggling to catch up, but learning a lot.

This is from a photo taken in Rome by my son, Damien. The painting is sort of tight, but that’s because it’s mostly an exercise. Kate had me increase the contrast between the warm buildings and the background and foliage, which I cooled down a bit. It works a lot better this way.

Lovely Casey. Seems like you’re having a really fun time with the exercises.

This is lovely Casey, I really like it. You have such a nice play on the colors in the bridge and buildings and I do like the contrast between the warm and cool areas as well as the nice dark values under the bridge and side of the river. Well done!

I think the combination of colours works really well; the foliage against the bridge is really striking. Must be a fun class!

Casey, this is fantastic! I can now look at your work on your blog with a lot more intelligence, having seen your sketches in person today. The colors and textures you get with that little paintbox and those waterbrushes! It’s amazing, really incredible!
Can’t wait ’til our next shared art adventure.

This, along with all your recent art, is fantastic! I dont’ know how I lost you — didn’t realize that you’d moved your blog. Thanks goodness I’ve found you again (thanks to Laura!) and will now bookmark the new site. Really — your Provence paintings are incredible.

Casey! This is wonderful. I love the contrast you were working on as well as the bridge. (And you know how fond I am of “waterways”!) Looks like you are working hard and having fun.
