Beach Sketches

July 14, 2007

My favorite thing to do on the beach is to sketch people.  Unfortunately, I only got a few days on the beach while in New Jersey this year, but maybe I’ll be able to do a little more in Brittany in a couple of weeks.  The advantage to sketching over swimming is that you don’t care if the weather’s not perfect….

I love these beach sketches! You’ve got some challenging perspectives there too. I particularly like the one of the woman with the hat viewed from behind, with a wash for the sky. Is it water soluble graphite pencil you’re using there?

And how did you get those birds to stay still??

These are all water-soluble graphite with a little pen on top to add definition. The seagulls just wouldn’t stay still, but then neither would the people!

Wonderful Casey and now I know how quickly you can dash these off! My husband and I took Robbie to the Toy Boat Pond yesterday and there was a new family of tiny little ducks swimming around. I sketched two people sitting in front of Sandy’s tree using the Derwent light wash pencil – you’d be proud to see what you taught me!

Great sketches! I like the grumpy looking guy–he seems to be trying to figure out how he can get back to work instead of wasting time at the beach!

    Well done!
