Macau and the Giant Buddha

June 10, 2007

Still more sketches from my Hong Kong trip- We went to Macau (the former Portuguese colony) for a day near the end of our stay, and really loved it.  We stayed away from the casinos and went to the center of the colorful old colonial city.  I wish I’d had more time to sketch, but it was so very hot that day that it was difficult to stop. We went up to the ruins of an old colonial church and there was a slight breeze by the entrance, so I quickly scribbled the view from there :

Late in the afternoon, after a few hours in their excellent cultural museum and a hearty Portuguese lunch, we went looking for the lighthouse (another  must see) and got a little bit lost, so by the time we made it up there it was almost dark.  Here’s a quick impression:

Everybody on the boat back to Hong Kong seemed exhausted – I sketched the man across the aisle from me:

Finally, on our last day we went out to Landau island and rode the skyrail up to the Po Lin monastery where they have a giant Buddha which is a big toourist attraction. We were disappointed by the Disneyland atmosphere at first , even though within the different altars at the monastery the atmosphere was calm and reflective, and also that the Buddha itself was only constructed in 1974. We naively thougt it was an ancient statue.  I drew Buddha, who is truly enormous, but nothing else that day :
