A Weekend Near the Sea

May 14, 2007

We spent the weekend visiting friends who’ve recently moved to a house in in Vertou near Nantes. On Saturday afternoon, we drove to Pornic, a beautiful unspoiled beach town with some amazing houses dating to the end of the nineteenth century. Rich bourgeois families from Paris and Nantes used to summer there. Today the price of even a tiny cottage far from the coast is out of most people’s budget. We had a great time hiking along the beaches on the rocks and cliffs. While some of us went in the ocean, despite the chilly temperatures, I was able to do a bit of sketching. I would have liked to have more time to draw, but it’s difficult to ask 8 other people to wait…. Here are some quick impressions of houses along the coast:

And some of the people relaxing on one of the beaches we stopped at :

and the rocky coast which juts out into the sea – you can see some strange contraptions that are used for fishing :

What a lot of sketches you managed to get done! They really capture the atmosphere of the place.

Great sketches. The Monochrome ones are done in watersolubles?

    Thank you.
Fanta, they were done with a Derwent sketching pencil – mostly with the 8b.

AWESOME. thats so sool that you sketched so fast and got so much across. I agree with Dave, it does show a sense of place.
Wasn’t quite sure where you were at first.
We just got back from Mexico and I only did a couple small watercolours, mine was pretty much geared on my Canon Rebel Kiss
