EDM Challenge 122
June 6, 2007 at 3:16 pm | In moleskine, watercolor | 10 CommentsI hope I haven’t been boring everyone too much with all my Hong Kong sketches – I admit, it’s kind of the EDM equivalent of the old slide show of our vacation in the Grand Canyon. On the up side, you don’t have to pretend to be interested….. Anyway, I do have some left, but in between I decided to have a go at this week’s challenge, ’something where shade is a prominent part of the subject’. It’s a beautiful sunny day here in the Loire Valley, so I sat out in my garden and did two (very) small studies of light and shade on greenery, the first on a boxwood plant in front of a boxwood hedge, the second the wisteria I’ve been trying to portray since it was all purple flowers. Now it’s all greenery, except for few stray flowers. That small red spot on the top of the boxwood plant is a rosebud which serendipitously fell there.

Very nice sketches. I like the strong light/shade contrast and the texture of the whole pieces.

Interesting study Casey, I like the depth you achieved and the whimsical rose petal is perfect

Oh, your Hong Kong sketches are so, so much better than some slide shows I’ve endured! I’m available for more from Hong Kong.
Love your shadow challenge, especially the boxwood plant with its surrounding shadows.

Not at all bored by the slideshow! More please! I really like the top double page sketch of the boats on your last post.
These shade sketches are beautifully coloured – nice shades of green and I like the variety of tones.

These are breathtaking, Casey! The petal on the boxwood is percfect poetry, the the light is SO convincingly lush. Both of these are gorgeous. Well done!
I’ve been enjoying your Hong Kong studies too- it’s marvelous to have a peek at your vacation through your art and journaling. Thanks for sharing your trip with us all

Casey – I am so far behind with everything, I’ve missed most of this fabulous collection of sketches. The Hong Kong ones are such a delight to me and I love your narrative. I so impressed with your ability to achieve so much on the run. You should print this collection! I’m commenting here because I couldn’t pass your box wood pot – it’s a treat.
